I keep meeting the same person.

Different name. Different specialty. Different sport. But the same story.

They're good at what they do. Really good. They got into coaching or consulting because they love the work — the craft, the transformation, the moment when something clicks for a client.

They lead with a servant's heart.

And somewhere along the way, that servant's heart built a prison.

Here's how it happens.

You say yes to everyone because you want to help. You price low because you're not sure what you're "worth" — and besides, someone else charges less. You fill your calendar and call it success.

But then you notice:

Every dollar requires you to show up. No session, no income. No call, no revenue.

You're fully booked — and fully exhausted.

You're doing great work — and barely breaking even.

You didn't build a business. You built a job. One with no benefits, no ceiling, and no exit.

I see this constantly.

In the LPGA Teacher Education Program, when I'm working with emerging and young coaches figuring out how to build a rewarding and sustainable teaching practice.

In TAB, when I'm advising business owners who've been running hard for years and can't figure out why they're not further ahead.

In my own experience as a business owner — watching talented people, especially women, especially people of color, do exceptional work while trapped on a hamster wheel that rewards effort without building equity.

The pattern is always the same:

  • No rate sheet — just making it up each time
  • No positioning — just "anyone who needs help"
  • No leverage — just trading hours for dollars
  • No boundaries — just saying yes until there's nothing left

Passion doesn't come with a playbook. So they figure it out as they go. And "figuring it out" usually means overworking and undercharging until something breaks.

The way out isn't more hours.

It's not more clients. It's not a better Instagram strategy. It's not another certification.

It's decisions.

Strategic clarity about:

  • What to stop (so you have room to breathe)
  • Where to build leverage (so income doesn't require your presence every time)
  • Who you actually serve (so you stop competing on price and start competing on fit)

That's what I call the three strategic agreements. I wrote about them in detail last week — but here's what I didn't say:
